During my career I've sat on both sides of the negotiating table. At times I have been the customer negotiating with one of my international suppliers and at other times I have been the sales representative of a USA-based company trying to sell my products to my customers in other countries. Throughout my years of experience I've learned that doing business with people from countries and cultures different than my own is a skill that most mid-level managers have not been adequately trained for. This is because mid-level managers from most companies seldom have the opportunity to travel internationally, and when they do, it is only for short periods of time which does not allow them to truly understand the differences in business practices and processes.
